Freeholder Steven A. Tanelli was elected to the Bergen County Board of Freeholders on November 6, 2012, November 8, 2015 and again November 6, 2018 to three-year terms.
Freeholder Tanelli served as Vice Chair of the freeholder board 2015 and as Chairman of the board 2016.
Committee assignments include Budget/Finance, Community Development, Information Technology (Chair), Labor and Personnel (Chair), Law & Public Safety, Parks (Chair), Transportation and an alternate Veterans Liaison. Freeholder Tanelli also serves as a Board representative to Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund, School Estimate – Vocational, BCIA and Flood Advisory Council.
Steve takes a different approach to governing, one that is built on personal contact, win-win resolutions and positive results that leave residents with a renewed confidence in their elected officials.
A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Steve was elected to the North Arlington Mayor & Council to fill an unexpired term in November of 2004. He was subsequently reelected by large margins in 2005, 2008 and 2011. 2012 Steve was asked to run for Bergen County Freeholder. After being elected November of 2012, Steve resigned his Council seat January 2, 2013 to assume the office of Bergen County freeholder.
Born in Newark, Steve is a North Arlington homeowner where he resides with his wife Sharon. The Tanelli’s have 3 grown sons and 2 grandsons. They are both proud to have 2 sons continue the families commitment to public service as first responders.
A former Little League, Recreation Basketball, Football and Wrestling coach, Tanelli served as North Arlington’s Recreation Director and as a former member of the Recreation Commission.
During his nine-year tenure as councilman, Freeholder Tanelli served as council president as well as acting mayor. He also served as liaison to the North Arlington Police Department and Board of Education. Was also on the Budget/ Finance Committee.
Freeholder Tanelli has championed shared service agreements and initiatives, pay-for-play legislation and transparency in government while stabilizing the Tax Rate. Tanelli was responsible for the technology upgrades to the Freeholder meeting rooms that now allow all meeting to be broadcasted live to increase transparency.
Active in several charitable organizations including Multiple Sclerosis, Steve has served as Eucharistic Minister, usher and Holy Name Society member with Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish located in Lyndhurst.
